What is NAP Consistency?

NAP consistency means having your business Name, Address, and Phone number listed in exactly the same format across every place your business appears online. Your website, Google Business Profile, local directories, social media profiles, and any other listing should all show identical information.

Why Consistency Matters

Google cross-references your business information across multiple sources to verify that your business is legitimate. When your NAP matches everywhere, it strengthens that trust signal and improves your chances of ranking in local search results. When it doesn't match, even minor differences create confusion for search engines and can quietly suppress your local visibility.

A mismatched phone number on an old directory listing, a slightly different business name on Facebook, or an outdated address on a review platform are all enough to dilute the trust signals Google relies on when deciding which businesses to show.

What Counts as Inconsistency

It doesn't have to be a dramatic difference to cause problems. "Street" vs "St.", a landline on one platform and a mobile on another, or a former trading name still appearing somewhere are all inconsistencies that add up over time.

This is one of the most overlooked aspects of local SEO, partly because the damage is invisible until you start looking for it. A good starting point is auditing your Google Business Profile first, since that is the most influential listing your business has.
