What is NAP in SEO?

NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number. It refers to the three core pieces of contact information that represent your business online — and keeping them consistent across the web is one of the simplest things you can do to improve your local search visibility.

Why NAP matters for your business

When someone searches for a business near them, Google doesn't just look at your website. It scans dozens of sources — directories, review sites, social media profiles, and more — to verify that your business is real and trustworthy. If your NAP information matches across all these places, Google gains more confidence in your business and is more likely to show it in local search results.

If it doesn't match, even small inconsistencies can work against you. An old phone number still listed on a directory, a slightly different business name on one platform, or an address written differently across listings — these all send mixed signals to Google.

What counts as an inconsistency?

It doesn't have to be a major difference to cause problems. Things like:

  • "Road" vs "Rd."
  • A landline on one site and a mobile on another
  • An old business name that never got updated

All of these can dilute the trust signals Google uses to rank local businesses. This is why NAP consistency is considered a foundational part of local SEO for small businesses.

Where should your NAP appear?

At minimum, your NAP should be consistent on:

  • Your website (usually the footer and contact page)
  • Your Google Business Profile
  • Local directories like Yelp, Facebook, and any industry-specific listings

The more consistent your NAP is across these sources, the stronger the trust signal you send to search engines — and the better your chances of showing up when nearby customers are looking for what you offer.
