What is a Meta Title?
A meta title, also called a title tag, is the clickable headline that appears on a search engine results page when your website shows up in Google. It is one of the first things both Google and searchers see, which makes it one of the most important on-page SEO elements on any webpage.
What It Does
The meta title serves two purposes at once. It tells Google what your page is about, helping it decide when to show your page for a given search. It also tells the searcher whether your page is worth clicking. A well-written meta title can significantly improve your click-through rate even if your ranking stays the same.
What Makes a Good Meta Title
A strong meta title includes the primary keyword you want to rank for, accurately reflects the content of the page, and gives the reader a clear reason to click. It should sit between 50 and 60 characters. Anything longer gets cut off in search results, which weakens the message.
Stuffing multiple keywords into a title or writing something vague just to sound clever usually backfires. Google may rewrite your title entirely if it decides yours does not match the page content well enough, which is more common than most people expect.
If you are new to on-page SEO elements like this, understanding what on-page SEO covers gives useful context for how the meta title fits into the bigger picture.
