There are two types of backlinks:
Dofollow Links - These pass link equity and directly influence rankings. Most backlinks are dofollow by default.
Nofollow Links - These include a tag telling search engines not to pass authority. While they do not directly boost rankings, they still drive traffic and can lead to natural dofollow links over time.

Not all backlinks carry the same value. A backlink from a highly trusted site in your niche is worth far more than dozens of links from low-quality, irrelevant directories. Quality always matters more than quantity.

A good backlink comes from a site that is relevant to your niche, has strong authority, and links to you naturally within quality content. The anchor text used should be descriptive and varied, not over-optimized with exact-match keywords repeatedly.
Avoid backlinks from spammy sites, link farms, or irrelevant sources. These can hurt your rankings more than help them.

Focus on earning backlinks, not buying them - Create content worth linking to. Original research, detailed guides, and unique data naturally attract backlinks over time.
Prioritize relevance over authority - A backlink from a smaller, highly relevant site in your niche can be more valuable than one from a massive but unrelated site.
Check your backlink profile regularly - Use tools like Google Search Console, Ahrefs, or SEMrush to monitor who is linking to you and disavow any toxic or spammy links hurting your profile.
Vary your anchor text - Natural backlink profiles have diverse anchor text. Avoid having every backlink use the exact same keyword phrase.
